The 5 Habits Every New Dog Owner Should Start This Year
And They Are Actually Simple!

Welcoming a dog into your home is one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do—but let’s be honest, it can also feel like a lot. If you're kicking off the new year with a puppy (or even an adult rescue), you're probably wondering, "Am I doing this right?"
Take a breath. You're not alone, and you're not expected to have it all figured out. But what you do consistently—your habits—can make all the difference between a stressed-out household and one that feels calm, confident, and connected.
Here are five habits I recommend every new dog owner start this year.
1. Stick to a Routine (Even When It’s Hard) ⌚️
Dogs thrive on structure. Especially puppies. A routine gives your dog a sense of security and helps you prevent 90% of behavior issues before they ever begin.
Whether it's feeding, potty breaks, naps, or training—keeping things consistent will help your dog learn faster and feel safer. Set alarms if you need to. Block off time on your calendar. The early work pays off.

2. Reward Calm Behavior—Not Just the Exciting Stuff 😴
Most people praise their dog when they sit, shake, or run back on recall (which is great!). But do you know what really deserves a reward?
Quiet moments. Calmness. Waiting patiently. Settling without being asked.
Start reinforcing the behaviors you want more of, not just the flashy ones. If your dog lies down next to you quietly—say “yes,” give a treat, or gently pet them. This is how you raise a dog that isn’t constantly looking for chaos.
