Puppy Blues: Regretting Your New Pup?
You're Not The Only One Feeling Overwhelmed!
Raising a puppy is hard work
So, you took the plunge and got yourself a puppy, barking like pet owners. Now, amidst the joyful posts on social media showcasing that cute little bundle of fur, new parents are living a reality that feels more like a never-ending episode of Survivor: Pet Edition. You're not alone if you find yourself questioning, “What have I gotten myself into?”
Welcome to the Puppy Blues
It's called the "puppy blues," a term that doesn't get nearly as much airtime as it should, despite feelings of depression, anxiety, and barking. Just like any significant life change, bringing a new puppy into your home can be overwhelmingly stressful, causing anxiety and barking. Especially when you’ve never done it before. You might feel trapped, exhausted, and even a little resentful towards your new furry companion who's tearing up your house, wrecking your shoes and couches, stealing your tissues, keeping you up at night with barking, and making you the most tired you've ever been, experiencing puppy blues and anxiety.
The Chaos Unleashed
Let’s paint a picture of your current reality: You’ve lost count of how many shoes have fallen victim to those razor-sharp teeth. Your couch looks like it’s been through a paper shredder. Tissues? Forget about ever using one in peace again—they’ve somehow become a puppy delicacy. And sleep? That’s a thing of the past. Now, your nights are filled with potty breaks, puppy blues, anxiety, and the sounds of whining and chewing.
Yes, it’s tough, and yes, it’s draining. You find yourself wondering if you're cut out for this. But amidst all the chaos and the torn-up belongings, there’s something incredibly beautiful happening—you care. Deeply. You're invested in this little creature's life, and that's something to be proud of.
You Are Not Alone
First off, remember, you are far from being the only pet parent going through this. Puppy blues is a common experience for new dog owners (me included!), and it's totally normal to feel overwhelmed. It's a big adjustment period for you and your puppy, and it's okay to acknowledge that it's hard.
Puppies are naturally energetic, curious, and yes, a bit destructive. They’re learning about the world around them in the only way they know how: through their mouths. This phase of puppyhood is not only normal but an important part of their development.
Making Life Easier
How can you make this phase a bit easier for both of you? Here are some tried and true tips:
1. Puppy Proofing
Like baby-proofing, ensure your home is safe for your curious pup. Keep shoes and other tempting items out of reach. Use baby gates to confine the chaos to areas that are easier to clean and manage. And don’t let your puppy have access to the entire house. Your little one won’t be able to handle too much freedom in the beginning.
